If you are in your gap year between school and college or university, have you ever thought about teaching? Maybe it’s the sort of thing think you’d be good at, but that you have never really considered as a career. Or maybe you find yourself ‘accidentally’ teaching, just because you’re that sort of a person. Teaching in South Africa is one of those gap year projects that really are worth considering.
At the moment, in South Africa, only about 50 per cent of children who start school sit their final ‘matric’ examination. There are many children who are simply falling by the wayside, and with an unemployment figure in South Africa of 24 per cent, those who drop out have much fewer prospects of a job than those who go on to become high school, college and university graduates.
Amongst graduates there are too few who have majored in maths and science – a reflection of the lack of facilities available to teach these subjects. In primary and tertiary education all too often there are no libraries in around 92 per cent of schools.
In rural areas the situation is worse, as head teachers and teachers often don’t have the appropriate skills for the job. There may well be over 40 pupils to every single teacher – that’s quite a challenge! These are the kind of schools that really do appreciate gifts of pens and stationery that to us in the more developed countries are very simple everyday items.
Language can be a quite a problem, particularly as maths and science are taught in English from age 10 and a great many teachers are just not fluent.
There are so many children in Africa who are desperate to learn – willing to work hard and appreciative of every effort to give them a better chance in life. That’s a whole lot of kids who’d be happy if you wanted to have a go at teaching them!
By taking this on as one of your gap year projects you could get out there and give them the boost that they need, you will gain a sense of personal achievement, and you’ll make friends that you’ll remember for life.
Working in Africa on gap year projects with underprivileged communities is a great way to give something back and to help those who will genuinely appreciate it.

For thousands of visitors to Costa Rica whales and dolphins are a popular part of their holiday experience. The nation’s marine waters are home to or visited by over a third of all of the remaining species of these creatures.
In fact , there are 29 different species in Costa Rica’s offshore waters, ranging from the enormous Blue Whale—-the biggest animal the planet has ever seen—-to a recently discovered freshwater porpoise, the Tucuxi—-previously thought to reside only in the Amazon River.
And, of course, there are Humpbacks, always a popular tourist attraction. At 50 ‘ and 40 tons, many of these behemoths, one of the planet’s great underwater singers, spend their Northern Hemisphere summers as far north as Alaska and their winters off the Pacific coast of Costa Rica.
Not to be outdone, the Humpback Whales from Antarctica swim even farther so that, during the Southern Hemisphere winter, they are in Costa Rica, too.
What does this mean for whale-watching fans? Costa Rica has the longest humpback whale-watching season on earth.
While whales are regularly seen off the entire Pacific coast of the country, the central and southern coasts are particular suited for Costa Rica whale watching.
Humpbacks are more regularly seen from Jaco, Costa Rica, south to the Osa Peninsula (and spectacular Corcovado National Park) between December-March and again from August-October.
A very good spot to see Humpbacks is at Marino Belleno National Park (Whale Marine National Park) a few miles south of Dominical, a popular surfing area.
From November-April, Pilot Whales and False Killer Whales are frequently watched along the southern coast, too.
And, of course, there are numerous varieties of porpoises, many of which are year-round residents, often numbering in the dozens and sometimes seen in the hundreds or more (particularly along the southern coast around the Osa Peninsula).
Along the other coast, the Caribbean, visitors might find the Tucuxi (also called Guyana) porpoise, one of the nations smallest, but extremely unique, kinds of porpoises. These marine animals are found in both fresh and salt waters of the Gandoca Manzanillo National Wildlife Refuge (Sixaola River).
Not only are they the only kind of freshwater porpoise outside of the Amazon River, they’re the only known porpoise that shares a common language with another kind of porpoise: the Bottlenose Porpoise.
To see these creatures it’s a good idea to hire a local guide but with a bit of luck, you could find them nearly any day of the year.
Never heard of Uvita? It’s a good spot to watch whales in Costa Rica. Whether it is the beaches, volcanoes, attractions, relaxed life style, or famous Costa Rica nightlife, take your holiday now.
